Hi, I’m Alex — otherwise known as GrumpyChap — a solo creator using AI to help build apps that are useful to me, and hopefully to you too. I built AI LingoPlay because I wanted somewhere to rehearse real conversations in Japanese before having them for real — without the embarrassment of getting it wrong in front of a living barista!

How much does it cost?

$2.50 a month — deliberately about the price of a single espresso. That includes everything: every language, every scenario, voice, translations and feedback. There’s no commitment — you can cancel anytime in a couple of clicks.

Is this a language course?

No — and that’s deliberate. AI LingoPlay is a practice space, not a curriculum. Use it alongside your lessons, app or textbook to turn what you’re learning into conversations you can actually hold.

What if my level is really basic?

That’s exactly who role-play helps most. Set your level to beginner and your characters will keep things simple, speak clearly, and never lose patience. You can ask for suggested responses whenever you’re stuck.

Which languages can I practise?

Thirteen at the moment: French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese and English. Japanese learners also get furigana and romaji support.

How many scenarios are there?

Over thirty, from ordering coffee to job interviews, and the list keeps growing. Got a situation you’re dreading in real life? Send it in — scenario ideas from learners regularly make it into the app.

Can I speak instead of typing?

Yes. Tap the microphone and talk — your speech is transcribed into the chat, and your character replies with a life-like voice. It’s the closest thing to the real conversation without booking a flight.

Do I need an account?

Yes — a quick one. An account lets us save your languages, level, conversation history and personal tips, so every session picks up where the last one left off.

Who’s behind this?

One person — Alex, a solo creator (see above!). That means updates ship fast, feedback goes straight to the person who builds the app, and your support keeps an independent project alive.
